normally aspirated (L36) or supercharged (L67) ???
I have several of each... I have been into 3800 cars for years and part a lot of them out
you didnt mention supercharged so I will assume normally aspirated , I have 2 of them and both are still in cars so you could hear it run $200 for complete engine with accesories , $300 and I would leave trans attached both have around 170k but run excellent. all junkyard engines have 79k lol
what is leading you to believe you need an engine ?
reason I ask is I have bought 3 normally aspirated cars that were diagnosed by the sellers mechanic as seized engine , blown head gasket , cracked cylinder head respectively.
3800's are super tough ( on wards top 10 of all time list) and not known for any of those failures so when I see cars listed with those issues for cheap I buy them , keep my mouth shut , get them home , pull the spark plugs , spin the motor over , reinstall a clean set of plugs , fire it up if it runs good until the thermostat starts to open I shut it down quick before it can hydrolock again and I have diagnosed the most common problem with 3800's - intake gasket failure !!
the 3 cars i speak of I sold one to a friend who later sold it to a friend of his , another to a member on another local forum , and the third to another guy on that local forum who drove it to FLA and his dad has it down there , none of them ended up worse for the wear after their hydrolocks all are still driving around.
hopefully I just saved you an engine job , if you have a rod sticking out the oil pan then I can help you lol

or a 65k sc engine with Intense S1X cam , 130# springs , rollmaster chain , northstar throttle body, 3.25 pulley for $700
or a sc engine complete dropout with pacesetter headers ,1.9 ratio modified stock rockers, Wizair intake , 3.4 sc pulley 121k on engine for $750 or 850 with HD trans included ( sc cars got the hd trans which has a stronger diff & shaft)
to run an sc engine in his Na car he will need to tune it for the engine change , add the harness to run the boost bypass valve , change to a rising rate fuel pressure regulator ( +1 psi per 1#boost) and put a higher volume fuel pump in the tank.
another option is called a "top swap" where you leave the normally aspirated shortblock but install the sc heads , intake ,sc , tb ,injectors ,sc pulley ststem including idlers and balancer/crank hub along with the above mentioned fuel and wiring system upgrades , oh and the sc coils which are more powerful.
a top swap will make more power on a stock pulley since the na short block is 9.5 to 1 instead of 8.5 to 1 compression but the tune has to be spot on because the NA pistons are not coated like the sc ones and the rings are closer to the top of the piston so they are more prone to chipping above the rings , this being said a stock NA short block has been 8.6 @159 with twin turbo's so if the tune is on they will survive
I sell top swaps for $350 but personally by the time you buy all the gaskets its cheaper/easier/better just to put the whole sc engine in I only take these 3800's apart to sell parts ,for my own use I prefer stock factory assemblies and make the power with the peripherals , bolt ons , power adders ,intercoolers..... I have had 3800's trapping high enough to go hi 10's low 11's if I could ever find traction 12.2 @118 is my best with a 3800 someday I will do one in a rwd car that can hook.....
he can come up on a mon thru sat night or a sun hear it run and Ill pull the engine /trans/cradle , seperate the engine and have him on his way in about 2 hours total...
he said he doesnt need to hear it run. he also asked if it can be ready by tomorrow night. you can call me or text with any info. he also needs your address. thanks again,
