Hey guys, here is a summary of a small roadtrip that I set up every year. 2012 will be our 5th year doing this and the number of participants have grown every year. Still not a huge group, but it's not uncommon to be cruising down the highway with at least 30 different AMERICAN musclecars at any one time. We also usually try to incorporate some type of museum stops and/or custom hot rod shop tours while we are on the trip
With 2012 being the Northeast Rod Run’s 5th anniversary, we’re going to do things differently for this year’s trip. With that being said, NERR will still stay true to its roots, by being held over the first weekend of October, but we’ve just decided to make it a longer run and start earlier in the week than normal.
In past years, the participants that have had a longer drive to reach NERR’s starting point usually ended up using Thursday and/or Friday as travel days, but for those interested in going out a day early, that will be on a Tuesday instead. Another big change is that we are using Lake George, New York as our official kickoff site. This will be the first time we are starting at a location outside of New England.
In 2011, as an added benefit for the people arriving the day early we had things setup for them to do. Because that was so well received, we are going to try and add in a couple of optional things this year also.
The Northeast Rod Run usually ends on Monday, but this year it will be ending on Sunday morning for a change, since days are being added on the front end of the trip. This way most people should be home by Sunday night, so they can all make it back to work on Monday morning.
Some of the possible highlights for 2012 might be a visit to the Saratoga Auto Museum and Fort William Henry, a trip up Prospect Mountain on Veteran’s Memorial Highway, driving though the heart of the Adirondacks, a visit to the Thousand Islands area, the Finger Lakes, a few paced laps on Watkins Glen famous racetrack, a scenic drive though some of northern Pennsylvania’s best roads into the Poconos, a trip up Perkins Memorial Drive at Bear Mountain and possibly winding everything up at West Point.
Here are links to just of the few possible highlights:
MAN, SURE WISH I CAN GO! DON'T KNOW, IF MY CAR CAN WITHSTAND SUCH A LONG TRIP!! GOT A TIRED OLD MOTOR. NOT LOOKING TO BREAK DOWN SOMEWHERE, IN THE BUMBLE FUCK!!!
there are a lot of old cars that go. We all pack a bunch of tools and can fix most problems (less blown engines, rearends and trannys (on the road). We've fixed distributor problems, carbs, electrical, wheel bearings, shredded blower belts on the side of the highway, etc, etc. Some people that usually go even have their own shops, so there is some decent knowledge that joins us.
It's mostly a mature (in age only) crowd that goes and we've all been into cars most of our lives. this isn't one of those groups that doesn't know shit and just buys a nice car once and then talks about it for the rest of our lives. We all pretty much eat and breathe hot rodding, with probably over 50% of the group veterans of past and current Hot Rod Power Tours.
The Camaro I took for the last 3 years (not taking it this year though. have to give the girlfriend a break) gets about 7-9MPG on the highway. Tachs at about 3200 around 70MPH. It has a barely streetable cam with a 3300 stall converter and it's loud as all hell while rattling your teeth. Every year when the trip is over, it takes me almost a week to go through it and tighten everything back up. Totally not a daily driver, nevermind 1000 mile trips, but you know what? I roll the dice and take it anyway. If it broke down I knew AAA would get me to one of our hotels and I could deal with it then.
It becomes almost like a family reunion every October, with a real cool group of people from all over the eastern USA and Canada. No attitudes and no one trying to prove anything, or to show-off or brag about what they have. This is coming up on our fifth year and we've never had one asshole join us yet and even if we did, they would be shut out and left behind pretty quickly
Another thing is that we don't do much Interstate driving, so it's casual stuff that doesn't wear and tear on the cars. The worse part is if we get stuck in traffic, because some of the cars can be pretty built up and not like the heat (my Camaro being one of them), but with this trip being in October every year, that really helps with the temps
Another thing to think about, is that we usually only go right around 100 miles between stops. Stopping for bathroom, food, gas, shop tours, museums, site-seeing and stuff like that break up the long hauls, so the cars aren't screaming for long runs all the time. Plus we only do around 180-220 miles a day in total.
Just trying to give you as much info as possible so you can make an educated decision and not get in over your head, but at the same time, trying to let you know that it might not be as extreme a trip as you are worrying about.

Here is the first half of 2011's trip (still have to convert the second half). When the first segment finishes, be sure to click on segment two, to finish watching.
I should have the second half posted up by the end of the week
Even if you can't do the whole thing. I believe a bunch of people are planning on just doing day 1 this year. That should possibly consist of, meeting at Mt Wachusett in Princeton, MA then taking a leisurely cruise to Lake George, NY. On the way there, we will be stopping at the Saratoga Springs auto musem and checking it out. We will also be meeting another group that will continue with us to Lake George. Once there we will might be taking a short cruise up Veteran's Memorial Highway (the name of the mountain escapes me right now). then it's partytime that night before a small group of people head back east to go home on Wednesday morning.
I am attending the Good Guys show in Springfield, MA this weekend and then going to the GM National in Carlisle, PA next weekend and after I get back from those two events, I'll be getting everything together to send payment into Watkins Glen for our track time
With that being said, if you plan on joining us on the track and haven't contacted me yet, I suggest you do so ASAP so you don't miss out. Since I am going to be busy and not going to be on here much, I suggest you contact me by email because if not, you have a good chance at missing out because it's so close to the deadline
Can't wait to see everyone in about 3 1/2 months. It's going to be here before you know it
As of today, there are only 3 weeks left to book some of this year's Rod Run hotels at a discounted rate. After that, some of them go up almost $50/night, if they still have rooms available
Anyone that delays any longer, could cost themselves a couple of hundred dollars extra
There will be a get together at Mt Wachusett www.wachusett.com/ that morning. From there we will cruise west on the Mohawk Trail (Route 2), before heading into New York and taking 87N, where we will be making a lunchtime stop for a visit at the Saratoga Auto museum saratogaautomuseum.org/ . We should be meeting up with more of the group there, before finishing the day at Lake George. If the weather nice that day, we can also take a drive up Prospect Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway before. http://http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P...morial_Highway
Wednesday, October 3, 2012
We will start the day cruising up Route 28, as we connect onto Route 30, before heading west along Route 3 to finish our day's drive at Alexanderia Bay www.visitalexbay.org/
Thursday, October 4, 2012
Our first stop this day will be at the Antique Boat Museum www.abm.org/. From there the trip will continue along the New York Seaway Trail www.seawaytrail.com/ until we finish our day's drive in Geneva, NY and the Finger Lakes region www.fingerlakes.org/
Friday, October 5, 2012
While this day's drive is the shortest of the whole trip (approx. 150 miles), it is also our highlight day. NERR will be taking a Thunder Road tour (for those that have pre-paid) on the track at Watkins Glen International http://www.theglen.com/Plan-Your-Vis...oad-Tours.aspx. After that we will be driving into Pennsylvania www.paroute6.com and ending the day at clark's Summit
Saturday, October 6, 2012
This day has a lot of weather dependent stops. Our first stop will be a drive up Pocono Knob, that overlooks the Delaware Water Gap. For those that are interested in a bit of walking, our next stop will be a sidetrip to Bushkill Falls www.visitbushkillfalls.com/. From there NERR will be going to Bear Mountain as we take a cruise up Perkins Memorial Drive before finishing out our final day in Newburgh
Also, if any people did want to go but missed the cutoff date, as long as I receive payment by September 7th, we can actually get more spots on the track
Yes the trip is definitely a long one, but we do short distances at every leg. The most miles we do in a day usually average around 190-225, but those usually come in 75 to 100 mile stretches because we stop for gas, food, bathroom or other planned stops (shop tours, museums, scenic parks, etc)
Most years I take my Camaro and that only gets 100 miles out of a 16.5 gallon tank, so we have no choice but to stop often
If you guy do plan on going next year, it will be a much easier trip because we will be back to our normal 3 day trips, which always take place over the first weekend in October, so you can already mark it off on your calendar for all years going forward
I was just thinking if the trip was a long weekend type thing and was more new England driving closer to home I would be down for it. I liked the previous one that left from wachusset and ended up at bar harbor. Something on that idea I would be down for.

Next year we will be back to that type of trip (long weekend), maybe even starting at some place like Lime Rock Park in CT
This year we are just going big because it's our 5 year anniversary
Every year we end up saying "this year is going to be the best one yet". While some might argue that may have come true a couple of times, this year will not be beat anytime soon
Let's look at a few of this year's highlights:
5 days, 3 states, 3 museums (car, boat, motorcycle), 4 mountain top cruises, 3 lakeside hotels, 1 race track, 6 scenic byways and at least 8 waterfalls will be stopped at on this year's trip
The trip was AWESOME, the people were great and the sites were over the top this year. Here is a short video clip of some of the cars on their way to Watkins Glen
For those that joined us... thanks for coming... for those of you that debated on going.... you missed one hell of a trip

It was absolutely a great time. If you plan on going next year, it's going to stay in New England, so mark off the first weekend of October and you all have a full year to make sure your cars are ready for a long roadtrip
Next year's trip is already in the works. Can't really say for certain where it is going yet, but all updates on the "2013 Green and White Tour" will be posted up on www.northeastrodrun.com as they are confirmed
Until then, enjoy some more pics.....................
