Was wondering if anyone is currently running aluminum rods on the street. I am asking because I bought a 632 Chevy short block that has them already in it, BME aluminum rods to be exact. Usually I would prefer a steel rod, but during my rebuild of this partial engine I purchased I would like to retain the Lunati Billet crank that came with it, and I'm pretty sure so much mallory metal would have to be added to the crank to rebalance it for steel rods that I would be better off buying a new crank. According to BME's website, these are the strongest aluminum rods made, and Bill Mitchell, owner of BME, claims they will last a couple hundred thousand miles in a street car because of the low load and low RPM environment. I called BME, and they can said they check the clearances and essentially remanufacture my current rods, or I'll buy new ones if they are junk. The previous incarnation or this engine ran 15:1 compression and a whole shitload of nitrous, but I'm plainning compression more around 11.5:1. I am still running the crazy nitrous system that was on the engine, but I won't be using it on the street.
Bottom line is, is anyone running aluminum rods on the street with success?
Good to know because that's really my plan, I doubt the car will have wipers and I'm not driving it when the snow flies. Besides, I'm going to have to keep saving up to put gas in it!
